Explain

A protocol is a set of rules and means for machines to exchange information. See also Interface .

Protocols often place relatively restrictive rules on exchange of information between machines. Whereas the term protocol refer to the rules themselves, the term interface is used for the actual implementation of such rules, for instance as programs and/or hardware.
