Abstract
This page explains how to set environment settings for COSMOS, in particular how to set language and proxy settings. In cases where COSMOS is used on a network without firewall, COSMOS can be launched without changing any settings in particular. In this case, you can skip the rest of this chapter. On the other hand, if your network has a firewall or you wish to customize COSMOS in details, please read on.

[Step 1] Opening the Preferences Dialog
In case of MacOSX, the Preferences dialog can be opened from the Preferences menu of COSMOS. In case of Windows or Linux, the dialog can be opened from the Preferences menu item of the File menu. The window shown in
Fig.(Preferences Dialog) appears.

[Step 2] Home URL Setting
The home URL setting specifies the map information to be displayed initially when the browser window is opened. There are two ways to specify this information: either the warp function can be used, or the home URL can be specified directly. You can choose both of these options in the Define Home Position panel. If you choose to use the warp function, select the Select Home Position menu item in the Warp menu of the browser window, to set the current location and search conditions as the home position. If you select the Edit Warp Point menu item, the set home position is displayed in the Warp Menu Edit window, allowing to edit the details. Note that even if you set multiple warp point menus in this window, only the first warp point menu is used as the home position. Refer to
"Customizing Warp Point Menus"for how to edit warp point menus.
If you select the Using Home URL and Navigation Condition radio button, the Home and Navigation Conditions group panels are activated (
Fig.(Using Home URL and Navigation Conditions) ) and become available. Enter the home URL directly in the text box in the Home panel. New navigation conditions can be added using the New button (
Window (Query Edit Window (Floating))) or copied and pasted from the
Search Conditions tab of the browser window.

[Step 4] Cache Setting
In this tab, specify the cache settings for contents to be accessed and/or downloaded. There are two types of cache: a resource cache, which stores contents such as images and bibliographic information, and a network mapping path cache. Moreover, there are three options for each of the cache types, Disable, Enable writing cache, and Enable. If you select Enable writing cache, COSMOS accesses the network and downloads the corresponding resource and mapping path even if they already exist in the cache. Downloaded resources are stored in the cache.

[MEMO]
Cache settings become particularly important when editing server contents. Set Enable for all resources if they are for viewing only. |

[Step 5] Proxy Setting (HTTP Proxy)
If you want to access various contents from behind a firewall, it is necessary to specify proxy settings. COSMOS supports three types of proxy, HTTP Proxy, XL Native Proxy and Gateway. If there is an HTTP proxy on the network, perform the HTTP Proxy setting in this step. If the proxy server is a GLOBALBASE server with Native Proxy setting, jump to the
next step .
How to set the HTTP proxy is explained below. First, obtain information about the WWW proxy server address and port from the network administrator.
|
[MEMO]
In WWW networks, in order to simplify the proxy setting, a method of accessing a file called proxy pack is often employed. In case of networks employing the proxy pack method, obtain the information about the contents in this file. You should then be able to obtain the proxy server and port number that can be accessed from the network on which your machine is placed. |
In the Preferences dialog, open the HTTP Proxy tab and select the Enable Proxy radio button. Then, enter the proxy server name in the proxy server text box and the port number in the port No. text box.
If GLOBALBASE servers to be accessed are behind the firewall, enter the server names in the text box under the label "@Please enter the servers to be accessed directly below@."
After completing the settings above, click the Reset button to commit the proxy settings. Then, terminate and then launch COSMOS again to activate the settings.

[Step 6] Proxy setting (Native Proxy)
This page explains how to set the Native Proxy. If you have already set the HTTP Proxy, this setting is not required. First, obtain information about the GLOBALBASE proxy server and port from the network administrator. In the Preferences dialog, open the XL Native Proxy tab and select the Enable Proxy radio button.
